On Thursday, December 8, 2022, the 10 Space Apps Global Winners were announced live from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. This year's winning teams represent the top 10 projects selected from the 5,300+ teams that took part in the 2022 NASA International Space Apps Challenge. The winning teams are composed of participants from 10 different countries and territories across four continents, and their projects showcase the incredible value of using open-source data from NASA and our partner space agencies to tackle real-world problems on Earth and in space.
Ten Space Apps Challenge Global Winners
The 10 winning teams also represent this year’s Space Apps Challenge theme: “Make Space.” We celebrate the diversity of participants, the variation of their project submissions, and the dynamic ways they used open data, science and technology, art, and storytelling to solve real problems on Earth and space. After multiple rounds of judging, Space Apps Executive Judges have selected the final 2022 Space Apps Challenge Global Winners. Check out the winning projects below:

The Global Winners Live Announcement
Co-hosts Denise Hill, Marie Mimiaga, and Dr. Keith Gaddis (pictured left to right above) revealed the Global Winners at our live event. Denise Hill is the NASA Heliophysics Communications & Outreach Lead and was also a 2022 Space Apps Challenge Author for the “On the Way to the Sun” challenge. Marie Mimiaga is a Program Director for SecondMuse and a member of the NASA Space Apps Global Organizing Team, and this year is her fifth year organizing a Space Apps Challenge. Dr. Keith Gaddis is the NASA Space Apps Program Scientist and the Program Manager for NASA’s Ecological Conservation and Biological Diversity Programs. He has also been a longtime challenge author. We were so honored to have these special Space Apps community members celebrate and congratulate this year’s winners.
The live announcement also featured a special message from NASA Earth Science Division Director, Dr. Karen St. Germain, who highlighted the collaboration and innovation that made this year the largest NASA Space Apps Challenge in history. In her message, Dr. St. Germain congratulated this year’s Global Winners and emphasized how the Space Apps community is a part of the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers, storytellers, and engineers. What’s Next for the Global Winners
Stay tuned as we continue to celebrate the Global Winners with our upcoming annual Global Winners video, which will feature the winning teams and their projects! In addition, once travel is deemed safe, the Global Winners will be invited to the Winners Trip, which will include a visit to a NASA Center and could potentially include viewing a spacecraft launch at a NASA facility. Again, congratulations to this year’s 10 Global Winners! And while we celebrate this year’s winners, we also recognize and appreciate the time, energy, and passion offered by each team that participated in this year’s challenge.
