WHAT’S A NAVIGATOR?
NASA Space Apps Navigators (“Navigators”) are NASA Space Apps Challenge community members who have demonstrated excellence in the program or excellence in relevant fields including, but not limited to: science, data, technology, and space. As a Navigator, you will be connected to the tens of thousands of NASA Space Apps Challenge participants to share your expertise and help enhance participant problem solving. You will also be relied upon to provide feedback on NASA Space Apps Challenge official resources, as well as judge participant projects submitted to the Universal Event.
NAVIGATOR EXPECTATIONS
Navigators are approved on an individual, rolling basis. Once approved, Navigators must attend two NASA Space Apps Challenge virtual preparation webinars. These webinars will train Navigators on how to best prepare for their role.
The Navigator role is 100% virtual. The time commitment for the role of a NASA Space Apps Challenge Navigator is approximately 20 hours total, with tasks ranging from a few weeks prior to the hackathon, during the hackathon two-day event, and in the weeks following the hackathon for those participating in the judging process.
NAVIGATOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend the Preparation Webinars: Attend two webinars to receive guidance on how to prepare for the hackathon.
- Review Resources: Review and provide feedback on resources related to each challenge to ensure the data is accessible and formatted correctly.
- Review Global Offers: Review and test links related to Global Offers to make sure everything works correctly prior to releasing these tools to participants during the hackathon.
- Sign up for Space Apps Connect Coverage: Sign up for shifts to participate in Space Apps Connect, the hackathon’s chat platform hosted on Github, where all NASA Space Apps Challenge participants are invited to connect with one another and with the NASA Space Apps Global Organizing Team, Challenge Authors, Subject Matter Experts, Global Collaborators, and Navigators. The shifts are time periods of 2 hours (recommended minimum of 4-6 hours).
- Engage with Participants in Space Apps Connect Discussions: Navigators engage participants in Discussions during the two-day hackathon, supporting participants by answering their questions or connecting them to the appropriate resources. Navigators often flag relevant questions for the NASA Challenge Authors and Subject Matter Experts as needed.
- Judging Projects: Navigators will judge participant projects that were submitted to the Universal Event, a global, virtual option to participate in the NASA Space Apps Challenge. Judging Training will be provided during the Preparation Webinars.
